Façades
When I lived in Toronto, I walked the same 500 metres from my home to the closest subway station. I did that walk at least twice a day, almost every single day. It was a fun stroll for the first ten times, a nice one for the following ten, but it finally ended up being and extremely boring one every time after that. The area I was in was residential and my main source of entertainment during that walk had been looking at the selection of detached or semi-detached houses around me. With time, I started noticing details such as the objects left in the porches and began fantasizing about what their residents might be or do only by looking at the furniture or random junk on display. The pictures of my neighbour’s porches, lacking any other context, could be taken anywhere and it is fun for the viewer to imagine the personality of the people who inhabit that space. What are their lives like? What’s their story? Is it even possible to guess that just by looking at a façade they put up?
